Knee prostheses provide a new quality of life:
the saviour when conservative therapy doesn't help!
When conservative therapies no longer help, knee prostheses can provide a new quality of life. They restore freedom of movement and ensure the patient is free of pain. However, an artificial knee is not always the same, as there are different types. These are used depending on the clinical picture and age of the patient.
An artificial knee is often necessary despite timely treatment. One example of this are degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis. Various therapies are used to try and preserve the natural joint. However, these efforts are not always crowned with success and so the question of a knee prosthesis arises.
Different types
of knee prosthesise
A biological prosthesis is the alternative to an artificial knee. The patient's joint remains intact. During a minimally invasive operation, damaged bone tissue is removed and the cartilage can regenerate. This procedure is supplemented by physiotherapy exercises and is mainly used for patients under 55 years of age.
The partial prosthesis replaces damaged bone material with an implant made of titanium or polyethylene. The healthy part of the bone remains intact. In contrast to this is the endoprosthesis, which is a completely artificial knee. This knee prosthesis replaces the damaged bone with a titanium surface. In some cases, surrounding structures and ligaments are also replaced.
Choosing
the right knee prosthesis
The condition of the knee joint is decisive in the choice of knee prosthesis. A biological or partial prosthesis is usually used for mild restrictions. However, an artificial knee is an option if the patient is older or if the existing structures are severely damaged.
