Patellar tendonitis:
consistent treatment of injuries to the patellar tendon
Full extension of the knee joint is only possible if the entire extensor apparatus is intact. This consists of the quadriceps tendon, the kneecap (patella), and the patellar tendon. Patellar tendinopathy leads to inflammation of the patellar tendon, which is extremely painful. Such injuries to the patellar tendon require immediate treatment.
The patellar tendon has a major task: it transfers force from the thigh to the lower leg. At the same time, however, this tendon is put under a lot of strain, especially in jumping sports and sports that involve rapid stopping and powerful kicking. Irritation and inflammation can be the result.
Treating injuries
to the patellar tendon and kneecap
Initially, patellar tendinopathy usually only manifests itself with mild pain after movement. This gradually increases so that the pain occurs even without any strain. Important: Treatment should take place immediately before a serious injury to the patellar tendon occurs. Such an injury can culminate in a rupture of the tendon, which can then no longer be treated conservatively.
Injury to the patellar tendon can also lead to injury to the kneecap. A rapid twist can lead to patellar luxation, in which the kneecap pops out of the joint. A fall, in turn, can cause the kneecap to splinter, with the surrounding tendons pulling the fragments apart as a result. If the kneecap is injured in this way, the affected person can no longer put any weight on the leg.
Always consult a doctor
for injuries to the kneecap and patellar tendon
Even if everything seems to be back to normal after initial rest and protection, injuries to the kneecap and patellar tendon should always be presented to a doctor. This is the only way to recognise any further damage and treat it in good time.
Here at the Arthros Medical Centre in Vienna, we treat injuries to the kneecap and other joint problems conservatively or minimally invasively. This usually makes it possible to restore full freedom of movement. Don't hesitate to get in touch with us for further information or to make an appointment!
